CALL ME MAYBE: CARLY RAE JEPSEN

Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson is trending right now on YouTube with almost 2 million hits. A fan video of the same song has 20 million hits. The song is catchy and the video has a funny twist ending... give it a listen.

MAD WORLD: MUSIC VIDEO - A New Spin on Gary Jules

Gary Jules made MAD WORLD famous with his downtempo brooding piano version. Originally written by Tears for Fears, and appearing on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, Gary Jules version charted higher than the original. It's one of my favorite songs, so I decided to cover it with a slightly different melodic arrangement and a more aggressive vocal style. Check out my music video for Mad World, and I hope you enjoy.

MAD WORLD: A NEW TAKE ON THE GARY JULES VERSION

Gary Jules version of the Tears for Fears song Mad World is one of my favorite songs. It actually charted higher than the original version, perhaps thanks in large part to the success of Donnie Darko. I wanted to cover the song, and actually recorded a version with piano very similar to Gary Jules... but then I thought, "what's the point?" In my opinion it can't be done better, so do it different... I've put a new, more aggressive acoustic spin on the song. Some people will love it, some will hate it... but it's fresh and not a carbon copy, so give it a listen, and let me know what you think. As always, thank you for your support.

SNAKE IN THE GRASS: NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Check out my new music video for Snake in the Grass. This was shot on the iPhone with an 8mm filter. The snake, which is an Eastern Diamond Back Rattle Snake, was shot on the Panasonic HPX 170 at 60 FPS.  Watch it just for the snake footage, if nothing else. Hope you enjoy!

LICENSING COVER SONGS

Want to cover your favorite song?

I'm in the process of licensing a cover song to release on iTunes and through other digital distribution platforms. It's a great song from one of my favorite artists... I'm not going to spill the beans just yet, so you'll have to check back soon to find out who it is... but needless to say, I'm very excited.

And, yes, you have to license the rights from the music publisher...

I know. in this day and age, intellectual property is stolen right and left, and no one seems to respect content creators (that's another story).... but licensing songs to cover is easier than ever, thanks to Limelight.

Limelight is a division of Rights Flow (which was just bought by Google), and they facilitate the licensing process. You just tell them the song, the writer, the publisher, how many copies you intend to sell, and they do the rest.

STRATOVARIUS or STRATOCASTER

In 8th grade I traded my violin for a Stratocaster... just found it. May be time to learn how to play it again...

Either way, it makes for some cool pictures - especially when you put a skull in the shot. Zombie Mozart?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Shot the cover art for the new single and part of the video. Everything was shot on green screen, which has become my preferred way to shoot stills and video. I'm excited about this one - doing the final mix now. Stay tuned for the release date.

I've got the turkey on the smoker, putting the finishing touches on the new song, and will start editing the video over the holiday weekend. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

I for one am very thankful for friends and family this year! Best to you all!

SLAVE TO THE APPLE MATRIX

So, I'm totally caught in the Apple Matrix... I've been using Logic 8... but the lure of Flex Time was too great to resist, so I upgraded to Logic 9. My first single is on iTunes and sell well, and the irony is not lost on me that I used that money to buy more software to make more music, so I can put it on iTunes and make more money to buy more software, to make more music to put on... iTunes.

HEAVY CORE GUITAR STRINGS

I've become fond of drop tuning lately... but I'm also a fan of light gauge strings - which get way too slinky when tuned to C or even D. Problem with the heavy gauge is they don't always seat in the nut properly, so I'm going to have to have my guitar setup. But I picked up a set of Dunlop Heavy Cores to try out... I'll report back when I get the nut on my Les Paul adjusted... can you say monster tone?

GUITAR CENTER

No recording session would be complete without a trip to Guitar Center. Mmmm... Les Pauls!
